“Loss of income” (i.e., business interruption) is a standard coverage component that is included in most commercial and business owners insurance policies, but policyholders are sometimes not familiar with what specifically triggers a valid business interruption claim or what their approach should be in analyzing and computing their company’s covered loss of income once the decision is made to move forward with a claim. In this presentation, Mr. Hines - as a CPA in public practice who has consulted with both insurers and insureds on over 300 loss of income insurance claims or lawsuits - covers the basics of business interruption insurance coverage as well as the essential elements of a business interruption claim computation. He also addresses certain special areas of coverage that, while not present in every claim, can have a significant effect on the claim calculation. And, finally, he offers an overview of selected real-life loss of income claims in which the interpretation of certain aspects of business interruption coverage resulted in very different approaches being taken on the part of the insureds and the insurers.
